Sunflowers

I love a pretty sunflower — I just seem to associate sunflowers with happiness. These glorious flowers grow so tall and make a beautiful addition to all flower gardens. The truly remind me of a gift from God here on earth.

The common sunflower, or helianthus annuus, is a plant that can get blooms in the late fall. Unfortunately, as Autumn is nowhere in site at this time, we probably will not see them for a while. However, I like to cover all flowers and enjoy them all times of the year!

The sunflower got its name from its huge, fiery blooms, whose shape and image is often used to depict the sun. The sunflower has a rough, hairy stem, broad, coarsely toothed, rough leaves and circular heads of flowers. The heads consist of 1,000-2,000 individual flowers joined together by a receptacle base.

This is a really cool video I found called “how times flies and sunflowers catch the sun”. Although, this is just a fun little video with no real relevance to gardening sunflowers, I still enjoyed it and though I would share!

Some of my favorite flowers are the Pansy flowers. The pansy, viola or violet is a plant that is found in almost every continent, except for Antarctica. Grow violets in the sun or shade with these simple instructions on plant care.

I love that my beautiful Pansies come back year after year. They are such a sturdy flower that is anything but “a pansy”. Typically, when we hear pansy we think weak. This flower is anything but that. Also, whenever I see Pansies I always think of Alice in Wonderland with the garden scene and “You can learn a lot of things from the flowers”.

In this video the host talks about some growing tips for this beautiful flower. I love that these sweet little flowers come in all different colors too. I love a variety of shades in my garden for a rainbow-like look. They are so simple and beautiful, and quite possibly my most favorite flower!

The Beautiful Rose Gardens in Portland, Oregon

Portland Rose Gardens

On a recent visit to Portland, my husband and I stopped by the Rose Gardens in Portland. It seemed like a logical thing to do, after all, Portland is known as the city of Roses. We had a delicious brunch on that Sunday, and then headed in the direct of the gardens for a day of leisurely strolling.

The Portland Rose Garden is also located very close to the Japanese Gardens which makes for a lovely day of outdoor fun. You can literally walk from one to the other in a very short span of time and enjoy some of the most beautiful sites that Portland has to offer.

I found a video online highlighting some of the beautiful roses the garden has to offer. When we visited Portland it was actually one of the hottest days of the year – somewhere in the 90′s – so unfortunately, it was bit too hot for me. Next time, I’m hoping to go on a beautiful Spring or Fall day!

Claude Monet Gardens in Giverny

Claude Monet is one of my all time favorite artists. His use of colors and master of Impressionism has left his handprint on my heart! I had the pleasure of seeing an exhibit in Los Angeles called from “Monet to Manet”. It was amazing and a day I will never forget.

Claude Monet’s garden is located in Giverny France. It showcases two gardens: a flower garden called CLos Normand and a Japanese inspired water garden. The two gardens are meant to contrast each other and also complement.

The flower garden is full of perspectives, symmetries and of course, beautiful colors. That is something that his artwork is known for. The Japanese water gardens and bridge were inspired by the collection of prints Money loving adored and collected.

For Those Who Love Tulips!

Beautiful tulips

I love tulips. They are without a doubt one of my very favorite flowers. They are so beautiful, graceful, without being pretentious. I’m not sure how some flowers seem “pretentious” but they do. The tulip is simple, refined and lovely. This video shows tulips in rows of colors that as the poster stated:

At first glance, it looks like a giant child armed with a box of crayons has been set loose upon the landscape. Vivid stripes of purple, yellow, red, pink, orange and green make up a glorious Technicolor patchwork. Yet far from being a child’s sketchbook, this is, in fact, the northern Netherlands in the middle of the tulip season.

I have a dream of visiting her one day! Until then, I will watch this video and enjoy from afar.

Monet's Garden at Giverny

This video is serving a great purpose in my life! Although I know my personal gardens will never be as majestic and grandiose as these gardens, it gives me inspiration for ideas and design. After all, a beautiful garden has a theme or direction it is going. For me, the most beautiful gardens are the ones dotted with tons of color. Like something out of a gorgeous Monet painting. This video is also great because the music is quite peaceful and in general it is quite relaxing to watch. Maybe one day I will have a magical garden to frolic in, but until that time I will be content traveling to gardens, walking through the roses, and watching peaceful garden videos!
